The 1st Dail Eireann 1919

The 1st Dail Eireann met in the Mansion House in Dublin on January 21st, 1919.
At this meeting, only 27 TDs (TeachtaDala) were present.
The remainder were:

  • still in prison for Republican activities = 34
  • deported = 3
  • absent = 5
  • Irish Parliamentary Party (refused to attend) = 6
  • Ulster Unionists (refused to attend) =26
    *(at least 4 TDs represented more than one constituency)

 

At this meeting, the 27 members agreed a Dail Constitution. They also issued three important  documents & declarations:

 

  • Message to the Free Nations of the World
  • Declaration of Independence
  • Democratic Programme
