The Spanish Inquisition

Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition
- Under the control of the Spanish Monarchy
- Tried heretics for non-conformity to Catholic scripture
- Issued declarations for Jews & Muslims to convert or leave Spain
- Those arrested would be interrogated for long periods, often based on one of thousands of informants employed by the Inquisition to inform on other people.
- Anyone could be accused of heresy, even those who simply expressed doubts about Catholic scripture.
- Defendants were often severely tortured as punishment for heresy
Each team of investigators contained:
- A Grand Inquisitor
- Two subordinate inquisitors
- A scribe
- A doctor
