Margaret Thatcher, as Prime Minister of Britain, favoured a ‘tough line’ on IRA activity, deploying the SAS while simultaeneously opposing all the options of the ‘New Ireland Forum’, 1984. However, she did sign the watershed Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1985 with Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald.
